Chicago Museum of Surgical Science
09/2008
The International Museum of Surgical Science is filled with artifacts and paintings that interpret the primitive and modern healing practices of Eastern and Western civilizations. From early practices to today’s revolutionary techniques, the Museum’s collections and exhibitions portray the mysteries, breakthroughs, failures, and milestones that have shaped modern surgical science.
The historic Chicago lakeside mansion that is now the Museum was constructed in 1917 under the direction of Eleanor Robinson to house her family. Her father, an executive of the Diamond Match Company, provided the funds to build the home.
The structure was designed to follow the historic lines of Le Petit Trianon, a French chateau on the grounds of Versailles completed in 1770 for Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette. Chicago architect Howard Van Doren Shaw was hired to design the mansion.
