Burma Kyaiktiyo Pagoda
12/2007
Our trip to the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda started at 4:30 a.m. from Rangoon. The following collection of pictures is from the 4.5 hour drive to the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda, the walk up the mountain, and photos of the Kyaiktiyo Pagoda.
Kyaiktiyo Pagoda,(also known as Golden Rock Pagoda) is a famous Buddhist pilgrimage site in Mon State, Burma. Believers claim that the large boulder was placed on the cliff 2500 years ago, by two nat (Burmese spirits). Atop the gilded boulder is a 5.5 m (18 ft) pagoda, which is believed to contain a hair of the Buddha. The pagoda is located on Mt. Kyaiktiyo, and to get there requires a hike of 7 miles or a trip by truck followed by a 1 mile walk. The boulder is covered with layers of gold leaf. Women are not allowed to touch the boulder, nor are they allowed to be within proximity of the pagoda.
